Martin Keavney is a local product and talented halfback with rugby league in his family. Father Alan played for Leigh in the late 70s while grandfather Brian played 98 games for Widnes.
Martin played for both Leigh East and Leigh Miners during his junior career and signed from scholarship with Widnes Vikings in December 2003. He proved one of the Vikings star performers at Academy level, particularly in 2006 when Widnes Junior Academy went unbeaten in league rugby.
2007 was set to be his breakthrough season with Widnes but due to the form of halfbacks Dennis Moran and Joel Penny he was not given a first team opportunity. Keavney was then loaned to Workington Town for the final four months of 2007.
There, Keavney more than held his own in National League Two, scoring seven tries in 16 games.
