Darryl is the third generation of the Kay family to play for Leigh, following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather.
Daryl progressed through the ranks at Leigh East and was selected to the England Schoolboy team that played France in 2002. Kay then agreed a deal with Wigan Warriors and quickly became a regular in a strong Warriors Junior Academy team. He emerged as a tight running second row forward with a good work ethic and lots of energy.
He appeared in two Grand Finals for the Warriors before linking with Leigh ahead of their 2007 season. Several all action displays and good form for the Senior Academy saw Kay promoted twice to the first team panel. He made four appearances before being recalled for the final weeks of the season when he notched his first senior try against Doncaster.
