Miles is a young fullback with plenty to prove after being on the books of
St Helens for the last few years. Now with a real opportunity to flourish as
part of Darren Shaw's first team squad, Greenwood is a player brimful of
potential.
The Oldham born back became interested in the game through uncle Emmerson
Jackman who later played for the Roughyeds. Greenwood came through the ranks
at Oldham St Annes and joined Saints in 2003 as part of their under-16
Foundation Academy Squad.
In 2004 Miles moved into Saints Junior Academy and played from the bench in
their Grand Final defeat at Castleford.
Impressive form saw people compare Miles to Paul Wellens during his early
time at Saints and it was clear that if Greenwood was to break into the team
he would have to adapt his game. Miles has became a utility back with the
ability to play fullback, wing and cover in the centres.
He was selected in a Boxing Day friendly against Leigh ahead of the 2005
season and became a regular in Saints Under-21 side of that year, earning
selection to the British Students Under-19s squad to play against France,
the Lancashire Academy squad to take on Yorkshire and the England Academy
U-18s that crushed France.
Miles was outstanding in the latter game, crossing for two second half
tries.
Throughout 2005 and 2006 Miles was a consistent performer at Senior Academy
level and a regular try scorer. For 2006 he was rewarded with the number 26
jersey in St Helens senior squad. Eventually, first team rugby did beckon
for Miles but it was at the Halton Stadium, and not Knowsley Road.
Steve McCormack snapped the highly rated Greenwood up on a loan deal. Miles
made his Vikings debut in a 48-10 National League One thrashing of Oldham
but was then unable to play in Widnes' Challenge Cup tie with Catalan
Dragons after joining the club after the cup deadline.
He went on to play three games for Widnes before an ankle injury cut short
his stay.
Greenwood is currently one of the prestigious sports scholars with Liverpool
John Moore University where he is studying for a degree in Sports Science.
Miles was one of several young players that enjoyed a sound first team debut
in the Boxing Day game against Swinton and will be hoping to make an impact
on Leigh's first team in 2007.
